Biographical Sketch: Matisa Schraven has been in the Financial Student Aid industry for nearly six years, since 2009 (from the peak of the industry transitioning to Direct Loans). Currently, Matisa works in the capacity of a Senior Federal Compliance Analyst where she assists in monitoring MOHELA’s contract performance against the anticipated baseline and assists the organization in meeting the requirements imposed on MOHELA by Federal Student Aid. She also attends conferences speaking about the need for the industry to learn how to service diverse borrowers including military veterans. Previously, before joining MOHELA, Matisa worked with Federal Student Aid (FSA) of the Department of Education to minimize risks during the Direct Loan transition and estimate borrower expectations and objectives. Matisa worked with the internal audit team of the agency to uncover gaps in processes before external agencies discovered them. She drafted processes to review archived documents of institutional reviewers from the agency across the country to ensure they were meeting program compliance standards. Matisa consistently advocated on behalf of student loan borrowers to ensure that the agency created a process with them in consideration. She also worked with the contracts and acquisitions team of FSA to outline the change management process to provide continuity between the servicers and FSA. During her time at FSA, Matisa was detailed to the Policy work group where she was able to review policies imposed on the agency and she particularly enjoyed construing regulatory requirements of the agency as it relates to its annual goals and objectives. Formerly, Matisa was a Revenue Officer of the Department of Treasury where she attained a valued sense of respect for tax payer dollars and a wealth of knowledge regarding the inner workings of the United States’ federal government.
Matisa earned a Master’s of Science in Public Administration from Central Michigan University, and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Campbell University. Matisa also holds a Project Management Professional Certification.
As a veteran of the United States Marine Corps (8 years and two tours of Enduring Freedom), Matisa continues to serve as a member of the local American Legion; where she teaches GED classes and citizenship classes with a partnering organization.
